ORIGINS AND RELATED WORDS

1. the ego

*egoist, egotist : Latin root--the pronoun ego, meaning I
I = the greatest concern in the egoist's mind, the most overused word in the egotist's vocabulary( t in talk, and the additional t in egotist)

*egocentric(noun:自己中心主義者、 adjective:自己中心的な) = you consider yourself the center of the universe; an extreme form of the egoist; not easy to get along with; utterly involved with oneself; self-centered

*egomaniac(noun:病的に自己中心的な人) = you carry egoism to such an extreme that your needs, desires, and interests have become a morbid obsession(病 的な強迫観念), a mania(度を超した愛着); dangerous and slightly mad; not normal; excessively, morbidly obsessed with one's own needs, desires, or ambitions
cf. egomaniacal(adj.) = morbidly, obsessively wrapped up in oneself

2. others

other = alter (Latin)

altruism = the philosophy practiced by altruists; philosophy of putting another's welfare above one's own; not selfish

Altruistic(adj.) actions look toward the benefit of others.
altruistic = unselfish; more interested in the welfare of others than in one's own(利他的な)

If you alternate(v.), you skip one and take the other.
cf. He alternates kindness and severity.(代わりばんこに親切にしたり厳格にしたりする)

You play golf on alternate(adj.) Saturdays.(隔週の土曜日にゴルフをする)

An alternate(n.)(代役、控え)in a debate, contest, or convention(大会、会議) is the other person who will take over if the original choice is unable to attend.
cf. alternate(adj.) = serving or used in place of another; substitute: an alternate plan

If you have no alternative(n.代替案、選択肢), you have no other choice.
cf. An alternative allow you some freedom of choice.

alteration = a change, a making into something other; not imply keeping things the same
cf. 
alter(v.) = change(v.)
alter(v.) your plans = you make other plans

altercation = verbal dispute(口論); argument; a heated dispute; a violent disagreement, a "fight" with words; stronger than quarrel or dispute; you get quite exited; excitable people often engage in

alter ego = your other I, your other self; someone with whom you are so close that you both do the same things, think alike, react similarly, and are, in temperament, almost mirror images of each other
