英英辞書を読もう!(14)―「黄金の羅針盤」(The Golden Compass)(8)―
Lord Asrielにコーヒーを持ってくるために、the Butlerは、ダイモンと一緒に一度部屋を出ます。
Lord Asrielはtraveling clothesを着ているようです。
彼のダイモン、a snow leopardは、彼に向かってこう言います。
"Are you going to show the projections in here?"
・projection=(photography) the image that a translucent(=almost transparent, allowing some light through it) object casts onto another object; to cause a film, image or light to appear on a screen or other surface
何かフィルムを見せるようですが、travelingと関係あるかな?the specimens(=an example regarded as typical of its class)もあるようです。
Lord Asrielは、これに関してthe Porterという名前を口にします。
I'll send for the Porter in a minute.
Srafopediaより
【Porter】
Servant of Jordan College. Also known as Shuter.Appears to be one of the main caretakers responsible for the physical upkeep(=activity involved in maintaining something in good working order) of Jordan College.
Responsible for bringing in the wooden box of “specimens” that Lord Asriel brings to the meeting in the Retiring Room. Also significant(=important or noticeable) as the Porter bears the brunt(=the main force of something unpleasant) of the blame for the “spilling”(=to flow, move, fall or spread over the edge or beyond the limits of something) of the poisoned Tokay. After Lyra's return at the end of The Amber Spyglass*, he gives her a key to let her onto the roof, in return for which she is to inspect(=to look at something or someone carefully in order to discover information, especially about their quality or condition) the stonework(=stone parts of building) and lead for him and report. He is also featured in Lyra's Oxford* as a guard/porter(=a person whose job is to carry things, especially traveller's bags at railway stations, airports, etc) who assists Lyra in finding basic information concerning Jericho*.
*Amber Spyglass=the third and final novel in the His Dark Materials series, written by British novelist Philip Pullman, and published in 2000. The Amber Spyglass deals most strongly with religious and metaphysical ideas
*Lyra's Oxford=a short book by Philip Pullman depicting an episode involving the heroine of His Dark Materials, Pullman's bestselling trilogy. Lyra's Oxford is set when Lyra Silvertongue is fourteen, shortly after the end of the trilogy.
*Jericho=
[In Reality]Jericho is an historic area of the English city of Oxford. Located outside the old city wall, it was originally a place for travellers to rest if they had reached the city after the gates had closed. With backstreets of 1930s terraced housing and many restaurants, it has become a popular location for student accommodation. In the 1950s it was a red light area with a pornography cinema (now the independent Phoenix Cinema).
[In "Lyra's Oxford"]Jericho is home to the "alchemist"Sebastian Makepeace. The witch's dæmon leads Lyra to Makepeace's house, supposedly to help the witch.
